Why not choose one cause?
At first we were hoping to identify one unifying cause for as many Ontarians as possible. But, after having many conversations, and hearing many perspectives, it became clear that there is no single recipient for our $200 that feels right for all of us.
We are motivated to use this $200 opportunity as a moment to find some unity, in a time of more and more division everywhere.
So, in lieu of rallying around one cause, organization or social problem, our shared endeavor will be the act itself, of coming together in pursuit of a broader public good.
This initiative is not about where you individually donate, but about why we are donating together.
Wait, we’re all getting $200? Tell me more…
On October 29th, 2024, the Ontario Government announced that they will be sending Ontario taxpayers a $200 rebate. There are a range of nuanced opinions about this. We won’t weigh in on that. The news release states that “payments will support families… at a time when the cost of living remains stubbornly high.” If this $200 will make a real difference to your family in a time where the cost of living is most certainly climbing at a rate much faster than most of our incomes, we think you should keep it. But, if the impact of $200 on your overall day-to-day life will not be significant, we hope you’ll consider attempting to stretch those dollars further by pooling our resources towards organizations who are actively working to address the cost of living for many.
When the federal government announced a similar initiative, suggesting $250 cheques, things got a little confusing…
To clarify: We ARE getting $200 cheques from the Ontario government and we are NOT getting $250 cheques from the federal government. (See Trudeau’s resignation… A completely different topic.)
